Risks associated with Body arts: tattoos and piercing

In recent years, body arts like tattoos and piercing have become more and more popular. Tattoos and body piercing are one of the ways people express their style.
Tattooing/piercing are permanent body arts and you could be the proud owner of a new tattoo or piercing in a matter of minutes or hours as the case may be, but don’t let it stop you from making a thoughtful decision. It’s important to be certain that tattooing/piercing is the right fashion choice for you.

A tattoo is created when ink is inserted, using a needle, into the dermis layer of the skin. This changes the skin’s pigment, and can be used to create almost any image you can imagine. A body piercing is done by making a puncture in your body. After that, a piece of jewelry is inserted into the puncture. The most popular pierced body parts seem to be the ears, nostrils and the belly button.

The health risks associated with tattoos and piercings includes:

Blood- borne diseases. If the equipment used to create your tattoo is contaminated with infected blood, you can contract various blood borne diseases like HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, tuberculosis.

Pain, itching, swelling, tenderness, redness at the site.

Formation of thick scars called keloids.

Difficulty in having magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan performed, as some of the tattoo inks and all piercing jewelry contains metals.

To reduce the above risks, make sure that the facility is clean, safe and has a good reputation. Proper sterilization of the equipment like needles and razors is important. Disposable gloves must be worn before and after the procedure. Hand washing before and after the procedure is also essential. Be sure to follow instructions on caring for your skin.
