Diabetes: How to reduce your risk.

Diabetes mellitus simply known as diabetes is a diseases in which there are high sugar levels in the blood over a prolonged period of time.
Glucose comes from the foods we eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose gets into the cells to give them energy. There are two types of diabetes mellitus, type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes the body does not produce insulin. It typically appears during childhood or adolescence. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not make or use insulin well. It is the common type, and it’s very common in people older than 40. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in the blood. Over time, having too much glucose in the blood can cause serious problems.

The symptoms of diabetes include: unexplained weight loss, frequent urination, increased thirst, increased hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds, frequent infections, headache, and itchy skin and so on.

Factors that could increase the risk of having diabetes are: alcohol abuse, unhealthy eating habits, lack of sleep, obesity, inactivity etc.

Diabetes can be prevented by making some lifestyle changes. Diabetes prevention is as basic as eating more healthily and losing extra weight and it’s never too late to start. Engaging in regular physical activity will help to get rid of excess weight and lower blood sugar. Stop smoking and alcohol abuse. It’s also important to see your doctor for regular check up.
